How to Prevent Kidney Stones – Before you can prevent the appearance of a kidney stone you need to understand that they can occur at any stage of life, even in children. They are related to several factors, such as poor eating habits, in addition to a genetic predisposition.

Causes

Bad eating habits may be present since childhood. Calculations in children can be caused by excessive consumption of salty snacks, which put unbearable amounts of salt in your body, being eliminated by the kidneys. So these calculations can occur by the crystallization of the salt. The treatment in these cases is simple, with the prohibition of its consumption and copious hydration to dissolve the crystals of salt inside the urinary excretory system. Therefore, the diet with excess salt may be the main cause of the problem, even for those who do not have a family predisposition for the genetic trait.

The incidence of kidney stones affects 15% of the population, which are usually related to the following factors:

  • Anatomical changes of the urinary tract
  • Eating habits
  • Obesity and metabolic disorders
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Medications (diuretic, corticoid , vitamin C and D supplementation , among others)
  • PH change and reduction of urinary volume
  • Prolonged demobilization
  • Age between 25 and 60 years, with peak between 25-50 years
  • Family history
  • More common in men than in women
  • Higher incidence in summer
  • Systemic arterial hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Occupational risk, when working at high temperatures
  • Fast weight loss

 

Prevention

The prevention of renal calculi is based on the diagnosis found to explain the formation of crystals. However, some factors are known to be related to its increased incidence, such as excessive intake of salt, protein, oxalate, phosphate, calcium, sulfate and others, as well as a decrease in fiber intake, magnesium, citrate (found in citrus fruits) and Water.

The correction of these predisposing eating factors may help with the reduction of crises of nephrotic colic (pain of renal origin). Therefore, the recommended general measures are:

  • Increase fluid until light urine
  • Decrease animal proteins to reduce the excretion of calcium, oxalate and uric acid
  • Intake of citrus fruit juice because it neutralizes the acid load from animal proteins
  • Performing physical activities
  • Decrease consumption of sodium (salt)

Vegetarians have fewer stones than meat eaters. However, patients with metabolic disorders such as diabetes and gout are at high risk for lifetime kidney stones, especially uric acid. Generally these patients present metabolic disorders that must be combated with diet and medicines for their control. Weight loss, associated with exercise, can minimize the frequency of kidney stone formation.

 

Foods to Avoid

Patients with uric acid calculus should restrict protein (150 to 200mg / day) and seafood. Patients with calcium oxalate (corresponding to 80% of cases of lithiasis) should restrict spinach, sweet potatoes, chocolate, multigrain cereals, beans, peanut butter, tea, celery and tomato. Unfortunately, the oxalate produced in our body comes from only 25% of the food and the rest comes from the cellular metabolism. Therefore, we can only interfere in the first portion.

In general, a normal calcium diet with low amounts of salt and protein decreases the urinary excretion of oxalate and calcium, which in combination with increased water intake leads to a decrease in urinary saturation, causing a reduction in stone recurrence kidneys.

 

Foods that fight against stones

If any type of blood or urinary deficiency is found during the tests, it is essential to correct it. In general citrus fruits offer citrate and magnesium supplements, and lemon, regardless of its species, is the richest fruit. Therefore recommending to take two to three glasses of lemon juice a day is excellent, being important for the prophylaxis of all types of kidney stones.

Do not forget that drinking water is a basic principle of renal calculi prophylaxis and how much to drink should be evaluated by the color of the urine because the concentrated urine is dark, while clear urine means that the person is well hydrated. Water dilutes the crystals in the urine making it difficult to form the kidney stone. In a tropical country such as ours one should always be consuming water for the perfect physiological functioning of our organism, including the kidneys, for the elimination of undesirable metabolites.

Each case deserves consideration, as in patients with stones caused by repetitive urinary tract infection, which should be investigated and treated, either with medication and / or surgery and with hygiene-dietary suitability.
