PEG stands for a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube. Most are now placed in the soldier’s lab, or in the radiology of the interventionist. The procedure begins with an EGD, where they look in the stomach from the inside, then a light shines through, if the light is visualized, then a small stab is done, and the catheter can be placed that way. This is only an abbreviated version of how it is done; the steps were left out.

The regular G tube or gastrostomy tube is usually placed in the operating room and requires a surgical procedure. It is placed in the operating room when performed in conjunction with other surgery, at least in most cases.

The care of both tubes is essentially the same. The most essential fact is that if the tube comes out, don’t wait until the next day to do something about it, make sure it is replaced as soon as possible, or if the patient is at home, at least insert a red Robinson catheter or even a a Foley catheter into hole as soon as you can. If the G-tube procedure is quite new, that hole will close fairly quickly, and you may need to send the patient for another operation if you wait until the next day.
